​Bacs is responsible for managing the rules and processes relating to sort codes on behalf of the payments industry.

Governance is provided by two groups:

Clearing Codes Management Group (CCMG)

The Clearing Codes Management Group comprises representatives from Bacs, Faster Payments, CHAPS and the Cheque & Credit Clearing Company (including the Belfast Bankers’ Clearing Company), together with the Chairman of the Clearing Codes Operational Group (CCOG) and a representative of Payments UK. CCMG is accountable for all matters relating to sort codes.

Clearing Codes Operational Group (CCOG)

The Clearing Codes Operational Group comprises representatives from Bacs, Faster Payments, CHAPS and the Cheque & Credit Clearing Company (including the Belfast Bankers’ Clearing Company), together with a representative of Payments UK and Vocalink, who also attend this group.

CCOG is responsible for day-to-day operational matters relating to sort codes and for making recommendations on policy matters to the CCMG. The group also acts as the Project Implementation Group for projects relating to clearing codes and bank reference data as and when required.
